Charities - when to give, when not to give

How often has the phone rung and on the other end is a charity request for a donation.  In a split second they want you to decide what size donation you are willing to give - assuming you don't just hang up on them.  When the Police Protective Fund called this morning I was fortunate to be sitting in front of the computer and put their name in Google.   What I found was an amazing site:  Charity Navigator, Charity_navigator_1 that let me know this particular group spends 64 cents of every dollar raising money.  It was so easy to tell the caller that only a small percentage of the money raised was actually going to help and therefore I was not going to give.  The solicitor actually had nothing to say.   Charity Navigator has great information, a nice Donor FAQ for common donation related questions like "is it better to give to many charities or a few?" and "can I deduct the full price of the ticket for a charitable event?"  Become a registered user and you can track and compare your chosen charities - we give this site 4-stars for ease of use, reputation and valuable information.

Recycle your Christmas Tree 2006

Parks to recycle Christmas trees
A Christmas tree recycling program will be offered at seven Delaware State Parks beginning Dec. 26 through Jan. 15, from 8 a.m. to sunset. The trees will be turned into wood chips to benefit soil and plant health and make landscape maintenance easier at the parks. Some chips also will be available to the public. Signs designating the location of the drop-off site within each park will be posted at the following park entrances: Bellevue, Brandywine Creek and Lums Pond. To help defray costs, donations of $2 per tree will be accepted by the Division of Parks and Recreation of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. For more information on Christmas tree recycling, contact Gary Focht, Division of Parks and Recreation, (302) 284-4526.

Santa's Phone Number

You would think Santa is really busy this time of year, but your kids may call him any time of day at  1-800-972-6242.  There is a new record message from Santa every day from December 13th through the 24th.  He reminds the children to be good and thoughtful to others and he sounds very real..... Best of all it is FREE!  We will archive this under Christmas and bring it out again next year!
